Featured artist: PsychodeliK – Are You Trippin' Yet?
As part of our ongoing “Rap’s New Generation” series, today we sat down with the upcoming underground artist PsychodeliK from Rio Rancho to talk about his recent music, his upcoming projects, his career advice and his overall experiences being in the music industry and he did not disappoint…
Thanks for taking the time to talk with us, PsychodeliK! Let’s go back to the beginning of your career. How did you decide to become an artist?
PsychodeliK: In my early teens I was a trouble maker from hell. Ok so I made plans to sneak out and see this girl. I snuck out and knocked on her window but she was asleep. I get back to my house and my step father is waiting on the porch and informs me he called the police. I grab a backpack with some survival gear I keep under the trailer and booked it towards a treerow. I slept behind a haybail that night if you could call it sleeping because all night I kept hearing the police radio and seeing flashlights. Over the next week I was living off the land and trying to get to the next town over. Over the course of the week I couldn't find a good source of water and I was becoming dehydrated. I figured the best I could do is close my eyes and hope my feet lead me to water. After about an hour I open my eyes " lo and behold" There was Alpacas but more importantly a big water trough! It was the best tasting water I have ever drank , granted it was full of spit.
So I continued until I got to the next town over….
I was sitting on the side of a road when a truck pulls up a guy sticks his head out asked me if I needed a place to stay and I said yeah.So I stayed with these gypsies in a circle of campers for a month they gave me a shotgun and a hound dog. They told me I needed to contribute to the commune, so I told them I knew a place we could rob so I took them to an archery range and we took everything and I mean everything. Did I mention that this is an archery range the police in my hometown use on a daily? Anyway about a week later there was a knock on the door…It was a detective. I got arrested and sent to juvie for a month and I raised hell. After that they sent me to a boys home a Salvation Army in downtown Wichita Kansas. Being there was a struggle and that's where I started writing raps to deal with my emotional distress. Eventually one of the supervisors threatened me and stabbed himself. So I ran away and lived on the streets of Wichita for a month then got a ticket to New Mexico where I lived in a cave for six months. The reason I'm telling you all this is because all of these struggles and hardships pushed me to become a rapper and I won't ever give up!
Nothing comes for free.
What about concerts? Do you play live?
I haven't played live yet because I'm not financially stable due to a bad shoulder.
Best punchline you ever wrote?
"I'll hex anyone who diss and ascend to perpetual bliss as you get pummeled with invisible fists".
