Featured artist: YT – Addiction Speaks

As part of our ongoing “Rap’s New Generation” series, today we sat down with the upcoming underground artist YT from Rock Springs to talk about his recent music, his upcoming projects, his career advice and his overall experiences being in the music industry and he did not disappoint…

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us, YT! Let’s go back to the beginning of your career. How did you decide to become an artist?
When and why did you start playing?

YT: I used to just freestyle for fun and little humorous parodys. Myself and best friend Tony maciel (Tone The Meldoic Monster) decided to take this serious releasing 2 mistakes as Big Tone And Whiteboy Slimm both of us later deciding to work on bettering ourselves as individuals but still work together fluently.

Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?

YT: Famous artists I always admired would be Too Short of course , all of the dope west coast rappers Ice Cube, Easy E, 2 Pac, Biggie Smalls , Jelly Roll , Scum , Twiztid , And More.
Let’s Talk about your music and your last work… My last work released Tagged Reflections is a concept album of all my ups and downs as well as my emotions being a Bi-polar Recovering Addict. It’s doing well featuring Scum, KDAVER, Tone The Melodic Monster, Rick-E, J Pun , Ren Thomas (of Vh1s signed and winner of Team Backpack) , and more. This album was a big stepping stone in my music career . Also this Halloween I released a Single Dark Deals Featuring Boondox (turncoatdirty) of Majik Ninja Entertainment and it’s doing very well a real banger!

Why did you choose to play this kind of music?

YT: The reason I chose hip-hop since a child I love poetry Dr. Seuss ect. So I really was interested in writing rhymes and poetry growing up till now and continuing just became my path as a artist.

Could you briefly describe the music-making process?

YT: I love how I make music I have my own booth in my house I make sure I get a dope beat have my producer Rick-E at D.A.R.K. Studios whip one up or I also produce so that’s never a issue. Then pick a concept that fits the beat chorus and it unfolds from there with writing. Once wrote completely (adlibs, highlights, dub) front to back I go in put a time limit and get it done . Following the recording I mix and master all my own music.

What makes this kind of music “good” to you?

YT: My music is good to me because I make it to stay sober to cope and in a sense help the world one addict or bi- polar at a time. I make it catchy, relateable , real, and full of dope vibes. I’m honestly one of my biggest fans .

I was really influenced as a active addict trying to beat my addiction when listening to Jelly Roll he did what I did and beat it fought and struggled one of my biggest influencers to do all of his mixtapes and albums. Also all of Majik Ninja Ent really all of my other favorite artists and Twiztid putting something so amazing together to bring amazing entertainment to the world and that’s the goal.

Have you been in competitions? Fleadh’s? Any prizes?

YT: Ive been in several competitions on and have placed top 3 twice not the biggest on completions more of a artist with a humble approach building relationships and such.

Do you perform in public? Describe those occasions?

I’ve opened for a lot of dope artists such as Scum, Axe Murder Boys (AMB) , Lex The Hex Master, KDAVER, Prozac, Liquid Assassin, T-Zank, B3 The Shark, and tons more and plan on many more amazing concerts in the future.
