Why be anyone but me?

Featured artist: Cal-X – Why be anyone but me?

As part of our ongoing “Raps New Generation” series, today we sat down with the upcoming underground artist Cal-X from Phoenix to talk about his recent music, his upcoming projects, his career advice and his overall experiences being in the music industry and he did not disappoint…

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us, Cal-X! Let’s go back to the beginning of your career. How did you decide to become an artist?

Cal-X: I just started writing. It’s aleays been that, writing. I started writing poems, then I tried writing books. Finally, I put some of my poems on top of beats and it stuck. From there, the process has been the same and I’ve tried to just capture how I’ve felt in a way people can relate to and appreciate.

Don’t look for validation! Be proud of your work even if everyone hates it.

What about concerts? Do you play live?

Not yet, but I am looking forward to starting!

Best punchline you ever wrote?

Girls with implants and aspirations /Taking wrong roads like Siri hates them

What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?

I just released my first mixtape on Spotify and Apple Music called “Think”. It’s a big mixture of songs I’ve made within the last few years which I was not going to release because I was self conscious of the quality. I made 90% of the songs just in my room! In the end, I enjoyed putting it together and I hope people enjoy listening. Right now I’m working on some trappy stuff so we’ll see what happens.

Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?

I think I would. The cons seem to be a decrease in the amount of creative freedoms you hold and the money you might receive from each project or song, but they take care of a lot for you. It seems like they streamline the process so you just need to focus on making music. I could be wrong though.

Any last words?

I’m putting y’all on the map, AZ! We been slept on for too damn long!
